No Smoking, please.

Everyone knows “Smoking is injurious to health”.
Why would anyone in their right mind smoke knowing it is injurious to health?
Why do people actually smoke?

Smoking rooms in Corporate offices (Not sure if this still exists). Smoking breaks every 2-3 hours taken by employees of all levels is a norm now. An increasing norm. Smoking and non-smoking areas in restaurants. Smokers on the streets, and public places. Isn’t this bad for the environment? There’s so much work being done to combat climate change, are these activists non-smokers?

Cigarette smoke produces 10 times more air pollution than diesel car exhaust, according to Medical News Today.

A team of scientists discovered that in just one day, a used cigarette butt emits up to 14% of the nicotine produced by a burning cigarette. And if the day was hot, the emissions were still higher.

Why are more and more people smoking? Even though they are successful? It’s all about the heart. I have friends, great individuals, who cannot stop. Some are scared of the relapse. While most others find themselves getting back to the habit because of mental and emotional pressures either at the workplace or in their homes. Smoking provides a temporary physical relief which they use to circumvent spiritual woes.

10 million die each year in India due to smoking.

World Health Organisation

Scientists state smoking reduces 10 years of your life. When a person loses hope, they resort to similar practices like smoking, alcoholism, or drug abuses.

When you give in to something you know is harmful, you find yourself enslaved to it. You are the slave, no more the King you are called to be.

Regret often pushes people into picking up smoking habits. Once you start smoking and it becomes a habit, it becomes a cause of regret for the body too.

The human body will return to the ground. Dust will return to dust. The soul and spirit lives on forever. Taking care of your soul and spirit will require you to turn to God, the Creator. Only God who is a Spirit can drive your spiritual blues away. Taking shortcuts to choke mental or emotional stress is like carrying a ticking time bomb. You are precious, don’t let false standards of the world judge you to irrelevance. You were created for Gods delight!

Cause-ing Creativity: No Smoking

No to Smoking

A play on the word ‘Cigarette’ to warn the user or potential user that smoking will be regrettable. Words are powerful, and anomalies such as these help with recalling messages that matter. Additional post copy on latest statistics help with driving the message.

These images I’ve shared in my last two posts can all be created using non-designer tools like Canva and Adobe Spark Post.

Cause-ing Creativity: SmoKing or a Slave?

Slave, not a King

This creative may seem slightly far-fetched, nevertheless, the point is to drive home the message that Smoking in essence is a form of slavery. You are no more a King of your life, but a Slave.

What does slavery entail? Abject subjection of an individual to a form of work they are unable to be free from. Their freedom is lost, leaving them stuck to work without remuneration and a life beyond work.

I once asked a friend why he can’t quit smoking. Why he cannot just will it, and break the chains. Like a few others I’ve heard say, they are unable to stop because they fear a relapse.

What’s really happening? The lack of purpose in life, boredom, anxiety, troubles, etc. potentially lead people into smoking. The toll from all the stress on their body is such that they give in to finding something external to soothe their senses. They are so consumed with soothing their body that they forget to address the real issue, which is the mind and heart. Of-course, smoking is only one of the problems.

I’ve had friends tell me they overcame the problem of smoking by finding a purpose in life. A purpose that required active thinking daily, followed by action that helped achieve short or long term goals.

Tobacco causes 1 death every 6 seconds.

Let the above statistic sink in. The rate of consumption has only increased over the years.

An Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) report says that use of tobacco accounts for about 30% of all cancers in men and women in India. Cancer of mouth is most common among men followed by lung cancer. Tobacco related cancer accounts for 42% of the male deaths and 18.3% of female cancer deaths. More here, a TOI article.

Nonprofit leaders or communicators with low budgets and paucity of time can create similar graphic using Adobe Spark Post or Canva. Human lives are precious and raising awareness in a cluttered digital world is paramount to making a wider and deeper impact.
