There are 1.77 million homeless in India, according to a 2011 census.

“While there has been a 28% decline reported from rural India, there has been a 20% increase in houseless people living in the cities. But still there is a long way to go.”, according to a 2017 HT article.

13.7 million households, or 17.4 per cent of urban households, live in informal settlements.
